Maryam Saaly, MSc Student (2017 – Present)

Research Interests: Geothermal Energy Piles, Thermal Imbalance, Thermal Analysis, THM Modeling, Cold Regions.

Bio: In 2017 Maryam graduated from Amirkabir University of Technology with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. In the meantime, she was working on unsaturated soils as her Bachelor thesis. In 2017 Maryam joined Dr. Maghoul’s research group. Her research interests are Energy Efficiency of Buildings, Renewable Geothermal Energy, Thermal Energy Piles, Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical Modeling for Saturated and Unsaturated Soils Anchoring Systems and Deep Foundations. Currently she is working on underground thermal imbalance due to application of thermal piles in cold regions. In the meantime, Maryam is working as a NSERC SERA (sustainable engineering in remote areas) trainee and she is working on renewable energies.

Ali Fatolahzadeh, MSc Student (2018 – Present)

Research Interests: Subsurface Utilities, Structural Integrity of Buried Infrastructure, Thermal Analysis, Cold Regions.

Bio: Ali is a Research Assistant and an MSc student in the Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Manitoba. He got his first Master’s in Geotecchnical Engineering from Shiraz University, working on laboratory tests and numerical simulation of Geosynthetics. He joined SIGLab team after working for 3 years as a geotechnical designer, specialized in geotechnical simulations (FEM, CEL). His current field of research is “The Integrity of Subsurface Infrastructure in Cold Regions”. He is also a computer programmer (Python, C, NodeJS) and does hiking, swimming, amateur astronomy, and photography in his spare time.

Iman Jabalameli, MSc Student (2018 – Present)

Research Interests: Earthquake Engineering, Dynamic Soil-Structure Interaction, Ground Vibration.

Bio: Iman was born in Tehran, Iran where he finished his bachelor’s degree in the University of Tehran, Faculty of Engineering in the field of Civil Engineering. He began his professional work in Iran’s developing construction industry in 2003 concentrating on Project Management of several major Residential, Commercial and Official buildings. His experience as a project manager in many credible construction companies like Atisaz, Moallem Construction Group, Housing Investment Group and …. gave him a bright experience of construction industry value chain, from an idea to construction. In 2015 he obtained his first MSc in Structural Engineering from IAU in Tehran. Meanwhile, he was working on developing a Special Moment Frame (SMF) Steel Connection which can dissipate a large amount of energy during an earthquake by using the FEM method and Abaqus FEM Numerical Modeling Software.

After he moved to Canada, he considered that his academic and professional experiences have prepared him, as well as given him the skills and knowledge needed for another graduate program in the field of Geotechnical Engineering. Furthermore, his keen interest in soil mechanics and understanding the behavior of soil, as well as his career objectives to become a professional engineer were strong motivational factors for him.

Combining the knowledge of Structural engineering with Geotechnical Engineering can give him a higher level of civil engineering proficiency and knowledge under the University of Manitoba’s graduate program.

Currently, he is a Research Assistant and an MSc Student in the University of Manitoba and working on Designing and Building a full-scale Seismic Shake Table.

Hongwei Liu, MSc Student (2016 – 2018)

Research Interests: Geothermal Energy, Geothermal-Based Snow-Melting System for Bridge Decks, Buried Utilities, Insulation Design, Frost Heave Modeling, THM modeling in Freezing Soils.

Bio: Hongwei Liu is a Ph.D student in Geotechnical Engineering at University of Manitoba. His research interest is developing innovative techniques for Non-Destructive-Test in soil through wave propagation analysis and advance computational algorithms. He obtained his Master of Science degree in Geotechnical Engineering in 2018. His research areas included snow melting system using geothermal energy, frost heave modeling, coupled Thermo-Hydro model development and fully coupled Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical model development. Research results have been submitted to several top journals and currently are under review.

Kirill Bobko, MSc Student (2016 – 2018)

Research Interests: Energy Efficiency of Below-Grade Building Enclosure,  Insulation Design, Thermal Analysis.

Bio:Kirill Bobko was born in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia where obtained his first Master degree in Civil Engineering in 2013 at State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering (NNGASU) with specialization in foundation design. After graduation continued to work as Civil Engineer in Thyssen Krupp Industrial Solutions (RUS) for almost three years. These years was a bright time full of memorable projects mostly associated with design of industrial units, steel frame analysis and design of various types of foundations. Working in TKIS (RUS) he learned professional practise and got first experience in geotechnical design. Later participated in half-year business trip in Germany collaborating within international team. During 2016-2018 was in M.Sc (Civil Eng.) program at University of Manitoba under supervision of Dr. Pooneh Maghoul where studied problems of heat transfer in soils. Research was focused on numerical modelling and analysis of energy performance of the building. Conducted a series of field work and lab tests evaluating thermal properties of soil. Kirill is a current student member of Canadian Geotechnical Society. At spare time prefers to travel with family.
